LOWELL HIGH SCHOOL

LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS

194 6

CLASS ODE

By

Alice Dunn

I

As troubled seas once more are calm
And peace restored to man
Our classmates have returned once more
To this their native land.

We are the class of "4 6 ”

And onward we will sail
To honors in our chosen fields
In this we must not fail.

II

To troubled nations o’er the seas
We must not close our doors
We must not fail those laid to rest
On far off foreign shores.

As future leaders of this land
Embarked on a strange new trail
To nations who are in despair
We pledge — We will not fail.

Miss Ryan

To Miss Ryan, the class of ’46 and the Spindle Staff in particular, extend sincere
thanks for making possible the realization of our hopes. Reflected in "The Spindle” are /

the results of her untiring efforts.

Since our first meeting in October, when the class agreed to support a year-book,
the staff members have been working on it constantly. We have found excellent co-
operation wherever we turned.

In the Art Department, Mrs. Robbins has spared no effort. Carl Sigvardson de-
signed and executed the monogram on page one. The other divider pages are signed bv
their designers.

Miss Lowney and all the girls in Personnel have spent hours typing copy for the
printer.

The editors have been glad to do their best and sacrifice every other consideration
for "The Spindle” of 1946.

ADMINISTRATION

Raymond A. Sullivan

The class of 1946 is the eighty-eighth to be graduated from this school which has
been in continuous existence since 1831 when spindles were first bringing fame to Lowell.

During those years threads of millions of lives have spun a variety of patterns. In
your class may have been developed talent that will ultimately make some of you
designers of a peaceful future for the whole world. For each of you, that future can
be happy if you emphasize as necessary the democratic values of life essential to your
own peace of mind. Courageously facing forward in such a spirit, you can cooperate
actively in the development of civic, national, and world peace and prosperity.

One warm, lazy afternoon in June, 195 6, I sat on my porch looking over
"The Spindle,” year book of Lowell High, class of ’46. The youthful faces of
the class belied the ability many of them had proved since graduation. During
the ten-year interval members of ’46 had gained much publicity, not to say

SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS

Ernest Shepard, Secretary; Everett Clement, First Vice-President ; James Keefe,
Second Vice-President ; Andrew Christopoulos, T reasurer.

SENIOR CLASS

Early in the fall we chose Joe Donovan to lead our class as president. He remained
with us long enough to be the most successful master of ceremonies ever to charm
an audience at a minstrel show, and then left in answer to the mighty roar of the ocean.

The remaining class officers carried on. In order to give the class full representa-
tion each home room was asked to elect one of its members to the senior council. This
group has appointed committees to select the class ring, to choose the class motto, and
to run the senior prom.

Our class elections have been lively affairs each year, but no one can completely
explain the all-boy slate of '46.

Wc lost many members in ’4S and *46 to the services, but those of us who have
stayed will doubtless bring fame to L. H. S., our Alma Mater.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

In Lowell High School, as in many other schools throughout the country, election
to the National Honor Society is one of the greatest distinctions which may be con-
ferred upon a student. Election to the Society is not based on scholarship alone; a
member must also be outstanding in character, leadership, and service.

The emblem of the National Honor Society is the keystone and the flaming torch,
the keystone symbolizing the high ideals of the organization, and the flaming torch
symbolizing its purpose. At the base of the keystone are the letters C. S. L. S. standing
for the four cardinal principles of the organization — character, scholarship, leader-
ship and service.

Those Juniors with a grade of 90 ' y or more, within the highest 5 ‘yf of the Junior
class, and those Seniors with a grade of 8 5 ( / or more, within the highest 15^ of the
Senior class are eligible for membership. They must, however, be approved by a faculty
council made up of the headmaster, submasters, and department heads. Each year a
special initiation ceremony is held, in which the members pledge themselves to uphold
the ideals of the society.

Since 1927 when the Lowell Chapter of the National Honor Society was first
formed under the sponsorship of Miss Helen Choate, 1 63 8 students have had the priv-
ilege of membership. Now under the guidance of Mr. Edward Sullivan, the National
Honor Society continues to function as the leading society of Lowell High School.

THE 194 5 FOOTBALL SQUAD

The outlook of the 1945 football was a very promising one. With the great
coaching staff of Herbert Cochrane and his able assistant Chet Barker, the staff took
the boys in hand and tried their utmost to mold a well geared machine. The coach
drove the boys hard and before long they were in perfect condition. They were headed
by the two Co-Captains Bob Dailey and John Dahlquist.

The boys were able and will’ng to learn. Their first was a grueling contest with
Salem. Although they were beaten their spirit wasn’t broken. As the season wore on
the team seemed to be jinxed by injuries. One defeat followed another and up to their
final game, with Lawrence High School they hadn’t won a game.

The boys rose up to their greatest height, and defeated the highly favored Law-
rence team. It was a tough game in which the fleet-footed Mike DeMauro time and again
turned back the strong Lawrence team. The Lowell line was outstanding. The com-
bination of Stearns through the Middle and DeMauro around the ends spelled doom
for the Lawrence team. This victory proved once again that the Lowell boys had what
it takes to win when the pressure was on.

The 1946 Varsity basketball team finished fifth in the Boston Interscholastic
Basketball League, under the guidance of Anthony (Tony) Archinski, who succeeded
Frank Skaff as coach. One of the major reasons for the team’s winning only one-
third of its games was the fact that none of the players on the squad had played on
the varsity team before. For this reason, much valuable time was lost in seasoning the
team. But what the boys lacked in playing knowledge they made up in game-spirit and
love of the sport. All the home games were played on the Textile College court. The
high scorers for the season were: Natsios, with 91 points; Ginalski, 73 points; and
Macaronis, 67 points.

TRACK

The 1946 track team of Lowell High School, which was coached under the in-
telligent guidance of George Haggerty, was built around the nucleus of the returning
lettermen of the year 1945. Among them were Captain Jack Abrams, star 300-yarder,
Charles Wojcik, hurdles and 600-yarder, James Kinney, 100-yarder, Henry Mroz, dis-
tance runner, Edward Stearns, shot-putter, and Joe Normandy, high-jumper, who left
early in the season to join the armed forces.

Our boys opened the season victoriously by finishing in a tic for first place in
the Northeastern Interscholastic Meet which was held in the Y. M. C. A. of Boston.
This was the first time that Lowell has captured that important meet. For their
strenuous efforts, our boys were presented with a trophy which will be turned over
to the school for posterity.

In the dual meets, Lowell defeated the Andover Jayvees twice, but lost to Lynn
English and Lynn Classical. The defeats at both Lynn tracks were due to the fact that
our team was unaccustomed to the strange floors at the Lynn gyms. However, our
boys came through with a gallant victory over our ancient rival, Lawrence, by the
score of 45-3 2. Lowell concluded the indoor campa : gn by finishing fourth in the senior
division of the Greater Boston Interscholastic Meet.

The schedule for the outdoor season included a quadrangular meet between Newton,
Lawrence, Lowell, and Medford; dual meets with Lawrence and the Andover Jayvees;
and the 'Tittle Olympics,” which is the annual event held at Shedd Park to compete
for the Foley watch.

The wealth of material which Coach Stan Stoklosa had on hand dispelled many
problems for baseball. The nucleus for this year’s squad was composed of veterans
from last year’s star-studded combination. Some came to us packed with experience
after playing Legion; still others from Twilight League and C. Y. O. ball. With a
field of such candidates and able coach, Stan Stocklosa had a fine team.

As is customary, the team entered in the Greater-Boston High School League
coming up against such powerful teams as Medford, Somerville, Everett, and
Chelsea. Last year’s team finished third in a field of eight.

The chief objectives were to extend our lead on Lawrence, as far as this year is
concerned, in sports; to break up the line of victories over L. H. S. which have been
garnered by Keith Academy on the field of combat; to cop the pennant of the Greater-
Boston League and get into the play-offs at Fenway Park.

BATON TW1RLERS

Wilfred T. Boulger

Attention! The history of the Lowell High School Twirlers. Lowellites rec-
ognize and admire our white and gold uniforms, but few are familiar with its origin.
It was in the fall of 193 5 that Wilfrid T. Boulger organized and trained a unit of
thirty members and one chosen leader. At the Thanksgiving Day game in Lawrence,
the twirlers made their first appearance and were received with much enthusiasm.
This resulted in a regular appearance at all football games including those played
out of town. The unit wore uniforms which consisted of white skirts and sweaters
displaying a large red L.

The following year an acrobatic leader was featured and the unit proudly intro-
duced their new two piece uniforms trimmed with gold buttons. In addition to
precision twirling and intricate drills, selected solo twirlers were featured.

. The public became interested and the unit appeared at the State Music Festivals
and the New England Music Festivals. These appearances have been discontinued
since the war. Popularity grew immensely and invitations were received to appear in
almost all of the principal cities in Massachusetts, New Britain, Connecticut and
Portland, Maine. There has been a great demand for appearances in Lowell and sur-
rounding towns. Small selective groups featuring precision and solo twirling, Swiss
flag swinging, electric baton and vocal numbers have appeared before every charitable
and fraternal group in the city.

Championship Competitions were introduced in 1942 and gold and silver medals
were awarded accordingly. A contest for Novice Twirlers proved successful and en-
couraged pupils to develop their abilities. Twirling is a twelve month activity which
has enabled members to perfect their posture and develop poise.

Captain John J. Walsh
Military Instructor

BOY OFFICERS

For years Lowell High School has been symbolized by the dashing Boy Officer
and now we present the officers of the class of ’4 6. Proudly displaying their handsome
militaristic uniforms as their predecessors have through the years, these boys represent
the 6 5th year of the high school regiment. Although the uniforms are a bit off the
military standard this year due to action of the United States Army, our officers wear
an original shoulder epaulet which designates organization, together with a red and
gray rank badge over the right breast pocket.

This is the year following the Second World War and with the entire world in an
unsettled condition a Third World War is not a fantastic impossibility. Perhaps these
officers of the Lowell High School Regiment will shed their sharp ceremonial uniforms
in favor of the khaki of the battlefield as their comrades of the previous years have
done. Come what may, the high school regiment will go on and the Boy Officers will
continue to train the underclassmen in military discipline and army close-order drill
so that they may be prepared to serve their country if the occasion should demand.

For many years the public has known and associated the high school with Boy
Officers and Field Day. When we of the class of ’46 who contribute to the "Spindle”
are aged and nostalgically look back upon our high school days, one of the outstanding
memories will be ’of the regiment and the Boy Officers.

GIRL OFFICERS

Bawita Lawler

THE GIRL OFFICERS’ ASSOCIATION

The Girl Officers’ Association of the Lowell High School was founded in 1896.
At that time there were only forty officers, who constituted a battalion. The highest
ranking officers were the five majors. The officers were chosen by the instructor on
the basis of their scholarship. Thus, the first major was the girl with the highest mark
at the end of her junior year. In 1936 the battalion became a regiment. Instead of forty
officers, seventy-two girls were chosen as officers for the first time.

Today the uniforms are navy blue serge with gold chevrons to indicate rank. The
uniforms have not been radically changed, although one year the girls had white uniforms.
The navy uniform is a badge of achievement which any girl may wear proudly.

As the years passed, the requirements were changed to include the girl’s personality
and leadership. Since the Girl Officers served as assistants in the physical education
classes, it became necessary to take physical ability into consideration. The girls are
graded by the two instructors for their class work, and then they are marked by expert
out-of-town judges in a competitive drill. The average of these two marks determines
who the future officers will be.

The Girl Officers aid the instructors in classes; they aid charitable organizations
by offering their services; they promote a higher standard for the girls in the school.
Being an officer gives a girl more poise and confidence. She has responsibility, because
she is an example to the girls in the school. She knows that she is regarded with critical
eyes by her fellow students, and that she must live up to the standards of the Girl
Officers’ Association.

THE VETERANS

One of the additions to the high school this year was the veterans’ room on the
first floor. This room has been given over to the men who have returned to the high
school in pursuit of a higher education. After three or four years in the service,
these men realize that there are no jobs with a future for uneducated men. Under the
G. I. Bill of Rights veterans have been given a chance to attend a college of their
own choice and that is precisely the purpose of the veterans’ classes. A great many,
who were graduated from high school in \3 9 and ’40, saw no hope of going to college.
Some cf them are nineteen, some twenty-five; some married, and some are single; but
all are able and anxious to make come true dreams of college. By attending these
classes they have an opportunity of making college credits.

Among these men we find would-be economists, textile chemists, and a few
teachers, and almost all the branches of engineering.

A number of these veterans have expressed their appreciation for the cooperation
of the faculty and Mr. Dana Palmer, who is advisor of the group. I think it is for us
to thank them for showing us that there is but a small place in the world for anyone
without at least a high school diploma.

PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT

The Personnel Department was organized about twenty years ago as a service
to both the pupil and the school.

The primary purpose is to develop knowledge of business and office organization
from the viewpoint of the office worker.

Training is given in courtesy, honesty, loyalty, efficiency and punctuality, so
that upon graduation the student is better able to take his place in the business world.

The department functions as a business office and its staff consists of fifteen
seniors — a Personnel Manager and fourteen assistants, selected on the basis of their ex-
ceptional ability during the Junior year. The work consists of duplicating, typing,
correspondence, filing and keeping office records.

Miss Annabelle C. Lowney, Head of the Shorthand and Typewriting Department,
is the Faculty Advisor and Lucy Wronski is serving as Personnel Manager for 1946.

108

ROOM 100

Room 100 remains anonymously quiet about its activities. The members cf Mr.
Harris’ trusted corps of accountants and secretaries know just how to put their
fingers on every bank account and financial enterprise in the school.

Secluded in the Old Euilding the office houses the comptrollers of L. H. S. There
they sell tickets, balance accounts, prepare deposits, and restore lost articles.

Mr. J. E. Harris, the bursar, advises, directs and supervises the processes in the
miniature bank. Most of the seniors in the room have chosen to pursue the accountant
course in the commercial department. Many graduates from Mr. Harris’ 'Special
course’ are well established in successful business careers.

Seated — Nancy Gilchrist, Don Spearel, Rita Coakley. Standing — Don McIntyre,
Mary Cirasella, Shirley Martel, Shirley Conners, J. E. Harris.

GERMAN CLUB

The German Club, after four years of inactivity, was reorganized on October
17, 1945, with forty members.

On Wednesday of the following week, a charter, drawn up by the officers, was
proposed by 1st Vice President Edward Ruszczyk. The Eighth Amendment of this
charter states that no person shall be an officer, unless he obtains the rank of A or B
in German. Any person may join the club.

At a later date the club was entertained by speeches given by veterans Timothy
Lyons and Gerard Miller. Mr. Lyons spoke on the customs of the German people,
while Mr. Miller spoke on German literature and culture.

1st row, left tc right — John Blaha, Marguerite Soucier, Rhona Shay, President,

SPANISH CLUB

The Spanish Club is the second oldest of the L.H.S. student organizations. In the
fall of 1921, students taking Spanish met with Mr. Cornell to discuss the advisability
of forming a club. The name "Circulo Espanol” was given the group, although it is
more commonly known as the Spanish Club, and Lucille Fuller was chosen as the club
president.

The only requirement for admission is that members be taking Spanish or have
taken it at some time during high school. It has always been the aim of the Spanish
Club to make its programs both entertaining and instructive. Each year, the club
presents several Spanish playlets. The club members also correspond with students in
South America and Mexico, thereby gaining a deeper appreciation of life in Spanish
speaking countries.

The high-light of the Spanish Club year is the annual Spanish luncheon, which
gives the members an opportunity to sample such Spanish foods as chile con carne, hot
tamales, guava jelly, and mate. This year, several Spanish-Americans were the guests
of the club at their luncheon.

This has been one of the Spanish Club's most outstanding years, in that the club
has had more members than usual, and a larger treasury. The members of the club, also,
for the first time in the club’s history, ran a very successful dance in the L.H.S. gym.

The Club has been entertained by several South American speakers, and also seen
Spanish films, all of which have helped to make the meetings most enjoyable.

THE BAND

Our band was founded on January 1, 1923, with the New Year's resolution to
make Lowell High School proud of her new organization. Under the capable direction
of Mr. John J. Giblin from its birth to the present time, the band has won sectional
and national honors and has always been the envy of all the surrounding cities.

The band was invited by John Philip Sousa to play with his musicians in 1924. It par-
ticipated, in 1926, in a national music tournament in Fostoria, Ohio. To get funds to
make this trip, the band boys themselves, raised $4,300. At the end of the trip the
band returned with eight cents to spare.

Those were the days when the band made headlines and held concerts. One of the
headlines in 1927 read "L.H.S. band wins First Prize, Class A, in N. E. Tournament.”
Headlines such as that predominated throughout the years. Mr. Giblin has treasured in
his scrapbook a certificate awarded by the National Bureau for the Advancement of
Music to the band designating it as a first prize winner of class rf A” in Gloucester
in 1937.

\Vc know of the fine work the band has done at football games, civic functions,
and on our annual Field Day.

The students of Lowell High School of today can look into the future and see
with pride a band which will always bring credit to Lowell High School.

THE SPECIAL CHORUS

The Special Chorus was first formed
in 193 5. It is made up of sixty selected
members of the Senior Class and some
Juniors with exceptionally good voices.
Under the very capable direction of Miss
Gertrude O'Brien, at each special assem-
bly, the chorus presents lovely musical
programs of classical and sacred selec-
tions. The Special Chorus not only en-
tertains at High School functions, but
also at many civic activities. To keep its
good work the chorus rehearses every
Thursday at the close of school and also
very often during study recesses.

THE ORCHESTRA

One of Lowell High Schools greatest assets is its orchestra. Under the direction
of the capable and never tiring Miss Gertrude F. O'Brien, the orchestra has come a
long way since its founder, Mr. Frederick O. Blunt, presented a group of talented
students before an appreciative audience a quarter of a century ago. Each year the
instrumentation has grown until today it contains such instruments as flutes, trom-
bones, bells, violins and a xylophone.

Any musically inclined high school student is eligible to make the best of his
talents. He may chose to be in one of the four divisions of the orchestra, string, wood-
wind, brass or percussion. One diploma credit is awarded. Rehearsals take place every
Wednesday after school. Many former members continuing in this field have suc-
cessfully reached their goal by playing in philharmonic orchestras.

The orchestra is always in demand. It appears at school assemblies, the school play

and also entertains at many civic and educational activities of the city. For the first

time since the war, the group attended the state music festival in Needham, Massa-
chusetts, to compete with students from the entire state. We wish to extend our sin-
cere appreciation to the members of the orchestra for their cooperation, and we wish

Miss O'Brien continued success in producing more organizations of this type.

GREENHALGE DEBATING SOCIETY

The Grecnhalge Debating Society was founded on June 26, 1 85 6, in honor of

Frederick T. Grecnhalge. The purpose of this Society is to incite in the youth of Lowell

High School the desire to become proficient in the art of presenting a strong and truth-
ful argument on any subject.

Despite the fact that the Grecnhalge Debating Society was "born and bred'’ in
Lowell, its activities have not been limited to Lowell. Members of this society who have
shown themselves to be outstanding in the debating field have travelled all over New
England, and have won several district tournaments for declamation, original oratory,

debating and extemporaneous speaking. The Greenhalge Debating Society has so ac-

credited itself that it has been accepted into the National Forensic League which has
approximately five hundred chapters throughout the country.

THE SCIENCE CLUB

SCIENCE CLUB

The Science Club, is a group composed of those students in our high school with
a scientific bent. This group, brought together with Mr. Kenneth Goward and Mr.
James Conway as advisors, is one of the most active academic organizations in our
high school.

It members find congenial companionship in their chosen field, as well as ex-
ceptional extra-curricular educational advantages.

The Science Club visited the plant of a local newspaper and was shown how a
modern newspaper is published.

From editorial room they went through the composing room. From there, they
went to the proofroom and the stereotype room, and then to the giant presses, upon
which newspapers are printed and folded ready for delivery.

Another very interesting and entertaining trip was the visit of the Science Club
to Father John’s Cough Medicine Company. Dr. Howard D. Smith, plant chemist,
took them from the cellar to the garret of the Market Street Plant. The Club mem-
bers watched the ingredients prepared, mixed, sterilized, and finally bottled.

Newmarket Manufacturing Company provided another opportunity for the Club
to see a different sort of industry. Here the club members were taken through each
department until they had seen the entire operation of the mill from the complete
modern manufacturing of cloth from yarn, down to the finished product.

Scientific curiosity was also satiated by supplementary intriguing experiments
performed by members of the club at meetings held after school. Our president, Charlie
Wojcik has provided us with excellent leadership throughout the year.

The REVIEW was first published in 18 87 in booklet form, having anywhere from
about fourteen to seventy pages.

The ’87 variety held much the same style and form up to 1942, when it was
changed to a tabloid format. The former contained stories, editorials, and contributions
from various interested folks, such as Congressman John Jacob Rogers (REVIEW June
1916). Gossip was somewhat scarcer in the older editions, having little or no equiva-
lent to our present day BLAH column.

Through the years, the REVIEW’S final edition has often been the substitute for
a year book. In these "super” editions, there were cartoons, drawn by some student;
pictures of the Boy and Girl Officers, Senior Class Officers, REVIEW Staff, the Vale-
dictorian, and the Salutatorian; a "Slamming Table”, and a lot of jabber.

Advertisers in the REVIEW, known to the readers of three or four decades ago,
and still known by the readers of today arc: The Thompson Hardware Company, Bon
Marche, Pollard’s, and Marion’s. In the past there have been advertisements that are
apt to strike us as amusing when we look back on them. Carr’s Pool Room — Tobacco
and Cigars, "The Home of 10 Cent Collars,” "Compare our 29c chocolates with other
brands of much higher price” (Evidently many did, for the concern was liquidated
about twenty years ago), "Graduation Suits for young men from $10.00 to $20.00”
(A suit at this price today would be high class burlap).

The staff of fifteen is chosen by the senior Review members, from the outstanding
students of English in their Junior year. The editor-in-chief is elected by the staff at
the beginning of the school term. Miss Ryan is the faculty advisor. Under her direction
the circulation of the Review has risen from 900 copies in 1941 each month to 1800
at present. At the same time the enrollment of the school has become smaller. The
size varies from four to eight pages, depending upon the articles of special interest.

The REVIEW is published now, as it has been for nearly sixty years, with the
purpose of presenting items that arc of lasting interest to the students of Lowell High.
